Dr. Horrible -- On The Rise -- Guitar Chords/Tabs

Continuing our series of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog lyrics and chords/tabs I present the first song from Act II: On The Rise. I found some other like minded folks transcribing the lyrics at http://whedonesque.org/viewtopic.php?t=1725 they make getting the words right the first time easy. I've also decided to try the more inline approach of the dueling lyrics, hopefully this will make changes clearer.

(Dr. Horrible)
Bm intro

Bm
Any dolt with half a brain
Can see that human kind has gone insane
To the point where i don't know
If I'll upset the status quo
If I throw poison in the water main.

G Bm
Listen close to everybody's heart

G Bm
And hear that breaking sound

G Bm
Hopes and dreams are shattering apart

    F#m A
And crashing to the ground.

Bm G
I cannot believe my eyes

Bm A G
How the world's filled with filth and lies

         Bm A
But it's plain to see

       E/G# G Bm
Evil inside of me is on the rise.

(Penny)

D
Look around
We're living with the lost and found.
Just when you feel you've almost drowned
You find yourself on solid ground

          Em Bm
And you believe there's good in everybody's heart

Em Bm
Keep it safe and sound.

Em Bm
With hope you can do your part

   A
To turn a life around

D G
I cannot believe my eyes

D A G
Is the world finally growing wise?

Bm A
Cause it seems to me

             E/G# G Bm
Some kind of harmony is on the rise.

D
Anyone with half a brain
Take it slow

D
Could spend their whole life howling in pain
He looks at me and seems to know

D
Cause the dark is everywhere And Penny doesn't seem to care
The things that I'm afraid to show And suddenly

D
That soon the dark in me is all that will remain
I feel this glow

         Em Bm
         Listen close to everybody's heart
And I believe there's good in everybody's heart

    Em Bm
And hear that breaking sound
    Keep it safe and sound

Em Bm
Hopes and dreams are shattering apart
With hope you can do your part

F# A
And crashing to the ground.
     To turn a life around.

D G
I cannot believe my eyes
I cannot believe my eyes

D A G
How the world's filled with filth and lies
How the world's finally growing wise

         Bm A
But it's plain to see
                And it's plain to see

        E/G# G
Evil inside of me
       Rapture inside of me

          Bm
is on the rise...
is on the rise...

thanks.

This is great. I'm a guitar player turned piano player and trying to practice/learn piano with some of these songs. Can I ask what sort of "strumming" patterns you use to play accompaniment on songs like this?

I know I'm viewing piano/keyboards from an overly guitar centric viewpoint. But that's what I played for years. Hard habit to break.

I keep falling back on my old standard -- double octave bass in my left hand, followed by a broken chord in my right. Kind of a boom-da-dat-da.

Obviously, I lack the vocabulary to adequately phrase my question. Ah well, I'm learning.

Thanks for putting these up. Very helpful.

Piano riff

I'm a pianist-turned-guitarist, and I use (very) a fast arpegio, kind of in the style of the harp playing in the intro. This would probably translate pretty well into piano.

I'm not really sure the

I'm not really sure the vernacular either to explain what I do. Basically on the Bm between versus I position my right hand over an inverted Bm with my thumb on F# and pinky on D and then with my left on octave Bs playing straight my right hand does: D D F# A B (repeat in time) Versus I usually just play the melody broken over the chord with left hand in octave, and the chorus is usually just chorded.

E/G#

When you write E/G#, does that mean you play them both at once? Or does it mean you can play either? Or is it something different?
Sorry for being so clueless, I'm just starting to learn the guitar!

Chord / Bass

Generally it implies what the chord you should be playing and what the 'bottom' or 'bass' note is playing, when I use guitar tabs to play piano I use that for my left hand while playing the chord with my right.

It's a split chord.

it's called a slash chord,

it's called a slash chord, hence the / character...
the bit before the slash is the chord you play, while the bit after is the bass note.

verse chords

Thanks for the chords!

Just a comment, for the first verse, instead of a G, I play an Em. And for the F#, i play an F#m or F#m7.

in the beginning the bm becomes a suspended bm+7 for that small change before the end of the intro and a few other places

Y'know it's finger picked.

I have been playing guitar for a year, and I can tell it's being finger picked. The first chord, when finger picked like this:
e---------2--------2--------2----------2----
B-------3--3------3--------3-3--5-3--3--3---
G---4-4-----4---4------4-4----4----4-----4--
D--------------4-----------------------------
A--------------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------

It sounds exactly like the intro. But I haven't figured out the chords for the bridge.
The chorus is the chords you see above.

whoops!

I was having trouble with the captcha and accidentally submitted it twice! -_-

reply

I don't know if I could ever have had the patience to do that. If there were subtitles, I would have, but not just listening, I can't stay that focused. I admire you now, for having the patience to do this and a kind enough heart to share it with the world.

Thanks for the E/G# chord, I new I was missing the bass note on this but I have been too lazy to work it out.
